- Courage
- Truth
- Honour
- Fidelity
- Discipline
- Hospitality
- Self Reliance
- Industriousness
- Perseverance
These are the Nine Noble Virtues as stated by the Odinic Rite. Some people don't like the Odinic Rite; some people do like them. The Asatru Folk Assembly has their own version that go like this:
- Strength is better than weakness
- Courage is better than cowardice
- Joy is better than guilt
- Honour is better than dishonour
- Freedom is better than slavery
- Kinship is better than alienation
- Realism is better than dogmatism
- Vigor is better than lifelessness
- Ancestry is better than universalism
There are differences, but it really doesn't matter. Both groups have a list that is worthy to follow. I do like the Odinic Rite's version better, because 1) it's single words which make it easier to remember, and 2) It focuses on the virtue rather than comparing it to something else. "Strength is better than weakness" can be interpreted as "Weakness is good, but Strength is better." O.R.'s version says "Courage". Single word. Bold. I like that. Courage. It doesn't set limits. It's infinite. Perseverance. It doesn't say "until". It means Persevere, without ending. Striving to continue to do it.
Maybe I'll do a blog on each Virtue and what they mean to me and how I interpret them.
